[Lavi heads off to the Church with Kanda, usually he'd be more than happy to go first -- or even lag behind, if he was feeling annoying. but instead, he keeps pace with Kanda, his shoulder not quite touching but not too far off either.
once they're there, lavi stops by the memorials already set up, and adds the flowers to the ones there already. he thinks about putting his hands together in prayer, but he's too tired to pull even that small amount of artifice. instead, he stands and moves to stand next to Kanda,]
I still think you're the most interesting guy here, Pickles. Thanks for humoring me. Ichi... Thanks for trying to look after us, even though you're lucky that Yuu didn't knock you flat that one time. Or maybe you'd have liked it?
[He isn't the same as Lavi, always watching, observing, recording--but he notices these slight changes nonetheless. He wasn't there when Lavi had to take down Doug, but how many others have come and gone since then? How many times has Lavi slipped up and let his heart stray a little too far off-course, only to come back and seek solace in the quiet after reality reared its head?
He doesn't wonder how Lavi would feel if he died. He'd have to be angry about it, if he did, and he doesn't have the energy tonight.]
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
[Listen he did terribly in Order school but they probably hear these prayers every damn day so he can know them, as a treat, even though he never says them for anyone ever.]
[How is it that even in this moment of solemn remembrance, that Lavi can still perk up a little at learning something new -- hearing something new, because Kanda really never says these prayers for anyone, and a part of him likes that he has, because he's learning more about him. he knows so much about him already, maybe even more than most people, and he should be content with just having that, but that doesn't mean he won't be happy to get more.
maybe lvellie was right about bookman -- hyenas for the battlefield -- vultures in the way all Lavi wants is to know more and more.
he presses his hands together in a silent 'amen'. and then after a beat or two, leaves the Church with Kanda. he wants to say something like 'are you gonna say that if I die too, or were those three just special' but there are jokes and there are jokes, and he doesn't want Kanda to hit him with Mugen's sheath again,]
I talked to the Masks. They said the cultists liked how the chimera turned out, so we should expect at least two more killers again next week.
[He could ask, and Kanda would roll his eyes and snap at him for it--because the real answer, something like "I said it because they weren't, and I wouldn't leave your rest in anyone else's hands, especially God's," isn't something he'd ever put into words.
But Lavi doesn't ask, so instead Kanda's mouth just twists unhappily.]
[Assigns Kanda as knowing Yuffie's name by now. He glances at the barrier, then turns towards the bulletin board instead, so they can look over people's profiles.]
Cloud [woah another name... this is easy because he knows what a cloud is] said the same thing. The big spirit guy or the hot woman, most likely.
at that, Lavi frowns, because he's thinking back on the last insane nine hours of trial and checking Karlach and finding nothing but Hand Evidence that could very well have been related but he hadn't pressed the point,
more importantly, he looks at the profiles and then at Kanda,]
[HE'S SLOWLY LEARNING... but whether he uses them or not is a different story
Also, he could explain that they narrowed it down based on the fact that Karlach and Iwatooshi are so much bigger than Lavi and those near his height, that the ponchos probably would've been uncomfortably tight on them as opposed to simply a little too loose on Lavi or any of the others--but it is still affection week, so, thoughtlessly:]
MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED UP WITH THAT FIRST!!! because Lavi understands logic and rationale, being the sort of person who is very rational at all times (not), and he'd appreciate evidence being laid out like that point blank. a part of him expects it -- or at least something along the lines of 'are you even strong enough to rip out a heart'. instead, he simply says the words 'i'd know if it was you', and something in Lavi uncoils, something a little like a front, and maybe more of himself than he'd like to admit.
anyway he puts his hand on the board next to Kanda's form, for once using the little bit of height difference to lean over him. usually, he'd be slumped or leaning, minimizing himself, or acting in an idiot way that makes him seem smaller to everyone's eyes. but now, he straightens, smiling.]
[HELLO? WHY ARE YOU LOOMING OVER HIM YOU CARROT he looks annoyed by this]
Some things you can't lie about. Even you.
[He may not know about Lavi's proficiency in weapons, or the true depths of his thoughts and emotions, the ones that belong to some other name that Kanda will probably never hear--but he's seen how Lavi fights. More than once, he's entrusted his life to knowing where Lavi will be and how he'll act on the battlefield. Even Lavi has reflexes and instincts, giveaways that Kanda is sure he'd notice, even with the minuscule amount of effort he put into helping.
Also I just think it would be really funny if it was you and he was so confidently wrong]
there's a beat of silence as Lavi Looms Over Him, his smile ever-present, but there's something sharp in his gaze at that. it's like the stupid part of him is like 'HUH? I CAN LIE ABOUT ANYTHING?' and the other part is like 'oh the fear of being Known',
and then he grabs Kanda into another hug because this is still affection week, squeezing.]
[this is so sad.............. he puts his hand over his eye to boohoo, but he peeks through his fingers to look at Kanda, still standing here with him.......
