The casualty total ended up being about three percent of the entire world's population at the time, if I recall correctly. Fifty million or so in the conflict itself, and another twenty or thirty million from what you could consider "side effects".
The real irony of it was that World War I had originally been called "The War to End All Wars" twenty years earlier. Clearly they underestimated the human compulsion for conflict.
They always do. You mentioned it before -- minimize past events to make their present greater. Thinking that they've above the wars of the past. Committing the same mistakes all over again. Human nature.
This one did, at least, lead to the formation of an international organization that would promote cooperation and provide oversight. They're not incapable of learning... though they tend to forget those lessons over time as the events that prompted them fade into the past.
[ well! he didn't bother getting into it when everyone was first being pulled out of the hell ocean, but a little while later mephisto's going across the hall to knock on lavi's door. rip if you were trying to rest after that! ]
[the door bumps open because at this point Lavi understands the importance of information-gathering, that and he's too tired to get up and close the door.]
S'open.
[he's all clean and properly bandaged, right arm and shoulder swathed, and he's also sitting on the floor instead of in the bed.]
Adventure. Like the one Bixing and the others went. 'Cept this one was borrowed from Harrow and Gideon's world. And it was less puzzle and more... ritual. We saw people we knew from our world. Had to kill them, or die.
[ mephisto probably had to wait in a line to get here, if the reactions at the end of the trial were any indication; but here he is, once again idly spinning his umbrella. ]
You've had quite a week, haven't you?
[ not nearly as obnoxiously cheerful as usual, just kind of matter-of-fact. ]
Woke up with Cosmos at the theater. We tried to wake you guys up at first, but no dice. Cosmos said he didn't want to kill me, and I felt the same way.
[though of course, that's only his word.]
I wanted to keep an eye on him though, since I didn't trust him. We left the bar and that's where we ran into the octopus in Cosmos's form. It had a drink at the bar, which made us want to follow it the aquarium.
That's where I killed Cosmos by accident while we were fighting. I cut its arm off there, I don't remember seeing where it landed. Then it chased me to the onsen where I finished the job.
anyway, he smiles; he doesn't really seem any different from before, though he is a little less cagey now that everyone already has an idea of what he is. ]
I was one of the kings who passed the very concept of fighting demons on to humans in my world, actually. So they could defend themselves against Lucifer and the other demons who sought to destroy humanity.
week 0 saturday
You familiar with World War Two?

[ not, uh, exactly the best era from a japan fan standpoint, but ]

What were its numbers? Compared to the previous one. Estimate's fine too. Just wanna get a feeling for it.

Smart.
[ ... ]
Well. For now; you might want to lock that in a few hours in case someone decides to go for a third week in a row here.
[ which is starting to feel like more like an inevitability than anything. ]

Lavi straightens, is there relief on his face? There might be, a little. The sort of relief that comes when you don't feel a need to perform,]
Hate to say it -- but I think their chances with me are pretty good.
[he might be clean, but he looks exhausted. his lips are speckled with blood too, it's fine.]
no subject
All the more reason to take at least minimal precautions!
[ he comes over closer and leans back against a desk chair, idly spinning this stupid ice cream umbrella. ]
So? What was all that about?

week 2, post-trial
You've had quite a week, haven't you?
[ not nearly as obnoxiously cheerful as usual, just kind of matter-of-fact. ]

At least it's almost over.
[jokes! we've got them!]
no subject
Do you have all your memories back now, or are there still holes?
no subject
[he shrugs]
'Course, if there are holes, then I might not remember them.
no subject
So, what actually happened, as far as you know?
no subject
[though of course, that's only his word.]

[ ...sounds stupid for an actual octopus, but if it's a demon, then sure, why not. ]
Was it while you were looking at it that it changed to look like him? And do you know why that was the form it took? Just out of curiosity.
